FAQ + privacy

Straightanswers.

What SPAI needs, what it sees, how accurate it is, and what it isn’t.

Getting
started

Hardware, setup and licensing.

What hardware do we need?

Apple Vision Pro. One headset per person using SPAI at the same time. No headsets yet? Buy them from Apple, or check Apple’s education store.

How long does setup take?

Setup is installing SPAI on each headset and running the built-in tour, which places the panels and explains what SPAI watches. We run the first session with your team.

Main-camera access uses Apple’s Enterprise API, and we’ll walk your IT team through what that needs.

How long is a license, and what happens when it ends?

Licenses run one year, covering two semesters or three quarters. At the end you can renew. If you don’t, access ends and we’ll help you export your session logs first.

Can SPAI follow our department’s protocol?

The five stations ship with standard scripts. On the Institution plan we adapt station scripts to your protocols.

Privacy
+ data

What SPAI looks at, and where it goes.

What does SPAI actually look at?

Gloves, hands and instruments, through the headset’s main camera, at the station where you’re working. It isn’t built to identify people, and sterile processing happens away from patients.

Does video leave the headset?

Detection models run on the headset with Core ML. SPAI also has a backend for session logs and some checks, which can receive frames. For a pilot, we agree with your IT and privacy team up front on what is sent, what is stored and for how long.

Is SPAI HIPAA compliant?

SPAI hasn’t been through a formal HIPAA or regulatory review yet. It’s designed to look at equipment, not patients. Any hospital pilot includes a privacy and security review with your team before go-live.

Who can see the session logs?

Your instructors or managers. Logs record steps, alerts and acknowledgements with timestamps. They’re yours, and you can export them.

Accuracy
+ limits

Honest numbers.

How accurate is it?

The gloves + hands model scores 93.6 mAP50 and the instrument model 92.1 mAP50 on their validation sets. Validation sets are cleaner than a real department, so real-world accuracy will vary with lighting, glove color and tray type. That’s exactly what a pilot measures. See the details.

Can it tell a hemostat from a scalpel?

Not yet. The current instrument model counts instruments and decides whether a tray is loaded or empty. Naming individual instruments is on the roadmap.

Is SPAI a medical device?

No. SPAI is a training and workflow-guidance tool. It doesn’t replace your department’s policies, AAMI standards, or a supervisor’s sign-off.
